They All Count's Countdown to Euro 2012

With just 10 days remaining ‘til this year’s European Championships in Polkraine, things are warming up nicely for another mouth-watering summer of international footie.

With bookie’s favourites Spain looking to build on their success in their previous two tournaments, there’s plenty of hope in England that ‘this could be our year’ (again!) as Roy Hodgson’s men are being touted as dark horses by many in the media. At They All Count we refuse to stoop to the lows of the English Tabloid press and their 'hilarious' attack on Roy Hodgson's speech inpediment - instead we prefer to focus on the positives, for example - how much he looks like a happy owl:-

First and foremost, however, lies the challenge of qualifying from the group stages for England. Amusingly the very fact that English fans now believe their team to be 'dark horses' has led to a quite incredible situation where many fans now believe that England could be challenging for honours because of our underdog status - and once again the eternal optimism of the English supporters put us in prime position for an embarrasing slip up in group stages.

Other notable contenders include perennial challengers, Germany, who along with the Netherlands, represent some blistering pace in attack, and a mean defence to boot.

On a side note, surely there is no other  team with a player that so perfectly represents their nation - let me present to you Thomas Muller, the most German man in the world:-

Italy, fresh from another betting scandal which has rocked their boat may well be the team to watch, however, as they try desperately to prove to the world that there’s more to Italian football than brown envelopes and defensive integrity – just as they did in 2006, off the back of another major scandal.

All-in-all we’re guaranteed a fast-paced, emotional rollercoaster of a tournament, sure to see plenty of goals with the introduction of the Tango 12 ball a welcome replacement for the disastrous Jambalaya seen at World Cup 2010.

Let’s just hope that we can score more than we concede this time ‘round, and show up some tough opposition to proceed to the knockout stages and win it! We live in hope!

Football Away Days: 3 Great City Breaks

There are a handful of events in the life of a football supporter that will remain etched in the psyche for years to come; rare, beautiful moments which remind us why we invest so much time and money in the following of our club.  Be it an FA Cup giant killing, an attritional derby win or a nail biting last day of the season relegation escape, these key moments of a football fans career have only ‘the day my first child was born’ or ‘my wedding day’ to contend with in terms of life defining occasions.

For those lucky enough to support a team involved in Champions League or Europa League competitions, another significant supporter experience is the European away day.  The appeal of a weekend away in Milan, compared to that of a rainy Sunday morning in Stoke, is obvious - and that is before you begin to factor in the famous stadiums, atmosphere and rich football history of Europe’s top clubs. Here are some of our favourites:-

The Nou Camp, Barcelona

It seems almost futile to attempt to up-sell a visit to the Nou Camp. As any football fan knows, and many non football fans to boot, there are a plethora of excellent reasons to visit not just the city of Barcelona, but its vast theatre of footballing excellence – The Nou Camp. Not only will you be able to witness some of the planets finest football, from the feet of Lionel Messi et al, in one of the most awe-inspiring stadiums you are ever likely to visit, you are also in a beautiful city known throughout the world for its culture, nightlife and culinary delights – a real win-win situation.

San Siro, Milan

If the luck of the draw sees your team facing up against one of Milan’s finest, then this is an away day you should certainly consider saving for. Both Internazionale Milano (or Inter Milan as they are more commonly known) and AC Milan share the cavernous 80,000 seater stadium that is the San Siro, widely considered as home to the most intense and exciting crowd atmospheres in world football. Away from the football, take some time to visit some of Italy’s most iconic tourist attractions, such as the La Scala opera house and the ancient ruins at the Colonne di San Lorenzo.

Anfield, Liverpool

One of the most established clubs in European football is undoubtedly Liverpool, with 11 trophies brought back to Merseyside by the all conquering teams of the late 70’s, early 80’s and most recently the team of 2005, who triumphed against AC Milan to win the Champions League title. As a city Liverpool is vibrant and exciting, recently winning the title of European city of culture. With a great selection of Liverpool hotels to choose from, alongside the great restaurants, shops and nightlife, Liverpool is the perfect destination for a football weekend away.
