I am of course referring to heir apparent to the 'nippy left footed welshman' role in the Premiership, Gareth Bale. Although his performances in the league so far this season have not exactly been breathtaking, it is his appearances against Inter Milan in the champions league that have elevated him within weeks to demi-god like status (full god status withheld by press due to England squad inelligibility.)
Over the course of the two Inter Milan games Bale certainly dazzled. He also achieved the impressive accolade of making the Brazil (and for many, the World) first choice right back, Maicon, look as helpless, slow and generally dazed as our Titus. Observe.
Before G-Bale stepped out onto the turf at White Hart Lane, after a very impressive display in Milan (albeit against an Inter team who seemed to have 'powered down' after a brace of goals) most news sources valued Bale at 20 to 30 mill.
Whilst watching Bale's comprehensive deconstruction and humiliation of Maicon I did a few simple sums. Knowing that two man of the match performances at the very highest level, against the current Champions League holders could do wonders for any players career (and value) I mused upon what Europes top clubs might pay for such a player.
Initial valutation = 30million
Bale skins Maicon down the left +2million
Bale skins Maicon down the left +2million
Bale skins Maicon down the left +2million
Bale skins Maicon down the left, sets up 2nd goal +4million
Bale skins Maicon down the left, Maicon blows a 15yard head start, sets up third goal + 10million
Now these are just rough sums concocted under the influence of cider, no basis in reality. Surely value depends on season long form. I laughed - I joked with my Spurs supporting associates. "Well hes off then, but at least that got you another 20mill."
Today - Real Madrid and Barcelona line up 50m bids for Bale
Whether he stays or not, 20million in 90 minutes aint half bad.
