Why Transfer Rumours Make Headline News

Transfer rumours always get football fans talking with speculation, gossip and in many cases complete nonsense! Premier League managers keep their cards tight to their chest regarding players they are looking to snap up in the transfer window and this January 2011 will be no different. We're bound to see the likes of Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs (not forgetting mega spenders Man City!) looking to sign one or two world class players. Here we look at why transfer rumours and signings are such big news in the English Premier League.

Players like Schneider, Torres, Mexes and Benzema will be a handful of players that managers will be looking to sign for their club in January. In football, there are always indirect negotiations of some sort taking place behind the scenes involving agents and clubs. These discussions are usually tentative approaches which are strictly off the record but some of these discussions do make the news. By testing the water in this way agents know whether a transfer would be possible before proceeding to a more advanced stage. These clandestine talks and meetings can also cause transfer rumours. Take for example the recent Wayne Rooney saga at Manchester United. The news that he wanted to leave the club made headline news in most newspapers and then all the transfer talk surrounding which team was going to sign him. This example just shows how big Premier League football transfers are by making headline news.

Signing a new player is equally important to the supporters as they want players that will improve their team and new signing can mean the difference between winning and losing. For supporters, the thought of your club signing a new player is very exciting. Apart from actual football results, it’s the one thing that fans always look out for when reading the football section in newspapers or websites. A football transfer can give everyone connected with the football club a huge boost along with improving the quality of the team.

Supporters tend to spread transfer rumours by word of mouth from one person to another. Networking sites like Facebook and Twitter fire the flames by spreading transfer rumours very quickly and to many people, especially if the rumour involves a well known player which can capture the imagination of the fans. If a famous player is seen talking to a club, people immediately come to the conclusion that a transfer is on the cards.

There are many websites that deliver the latest transfer news, from newspaper/magazine type websites to individual blogs. These websites contain all sorts of rumours from the sublime to the ridiculous. Many of these rumours are gossip although the mere fact that these websites are so popular demonstrates how seriously fans take this subject.

A huge amount of interest is generated by transfer rumours because they represent a unique and exciting type of football news. Football supporters cannot get enough of these stories especially if their club is involved in some way. Newspapers and websites in particular do their best to meet this demand by publishing a large number of transfer rumours.
